Maine Float-Rope Doormat

Taressa George

Float-rope is used by lobstermen to tether multiple traps together on the ocean floor. The problem with float-rop is that it can entangle whales. Maine lobstermen are now required to replace their float-rope with sink-rope. The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation purchases the old float-rope from the lobstermen, keeping the huge quantities out of the Maine landfills. The rope is then reclaimed and woven into virtually indestructible doormats by craftspeople in Maine. Maine Float-Rope Co. donates a percentage of their sales to the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation. They also support programs that protect the Northern Right Whale and research that promotes sound environmental practices for the state of Maine.

Colorful woven doormats in beautiful muted stripes. These unique mats are made from reclaimed lobster trap float rope, then woven by hand by local crafters in Maine. Colors vary so each is one-of-a-kind. 18" x 30". Reversible and easily cleanable. And, yes, they float!

Organic Fruit Teether Toys

Taressa George

It does take a village -- 13 villages to be exact -- to produce Under the Nile's "Veggin Out" collection of educational fruit and veggie teether toys. By bringing work to 13 of the poorest villages in rural Egypt, women are able to be at home with their children and make a living wage. The women from each village are taught how to make one of the fruit or veggie toys. Each village is then responsible for producing that toy and paid fair wages for their work. Under the Nile provides these women and their families with a new-found economic opportunity as well as providing the community self-sufficiency and sustainability. Global Family Projects are funded by matching 2% of Under the Nile sales with 2% from their farm partners. This unique form of funding fights poverty, making a significant impact by supporting communities in need.

To market, to market! This cotton knit tote is stuffed with 100% organic cotton fruits -- Chiquita banana, pear, grapes and watermelon buddies -- all dyed with natural non-toxic colors.

Esha Mango Wood Platter and Bowl

Taressa George

Mango wood is a sustainable wood. Mango trees are initially grown for their fruit but once the trees reach a certain size and age, they stop bearing fruit. It is then that the trees can be cut down and used to create wood products. The removal of the old trees makes space for farmers to plant new mango trees. None of the wood is wasted and the sale of the wood offers supplementary income to mango farmers.

A creative re-use of of old wood from mango plantations. Both the beautiful wooden bowl and the super stylish platter are handmade from sustainable mango wood. The platter makes a great cheese board or storage for condiments or sauces and the bowl will hold a large fresh salad. Platter is 19.5"L x 9"W x 1.5"D. Bowl diameter is 11" x 2.5"D.

Accra Handwoven Sisal Basket

Taressa George

Medina Baskets is a small, family-run business that, for many years, has worked with the artisans of Ghana. Through Kingdom Life Ministries, a Roanoke, Virginia group, Medina has worked with local weavers in Ghana to provide home-based production of baskets made from sustainable sisal, as well as supporting community schools and hospitals. Although this is a traditional craft, Medina has designed items for the modern home, combining the skills of the traditional artisans with the aesthetic perspective of the contemporary market for a successful partnership between rural communities around the world and distributors in the United States. All products and labor are fairly traded and no child labor is exploited.

Great for storage in every room of the house -- filled with wood by the fire, holding gloves and scarves for winter, overflowing with kids' toys or filled with towels. Accra baskets are handwoven in the villages of Ghana from sustainable sisal following ecologically and socially sound practices.
